Although over time, I went from feeling purposeful with my job to being triggered with negative emotions: Overcoming heavy amounts of unmotivating pressure and expectation for perfection. In turn, my mental health was impacted.

I realized I couldn’t continue to live like this. I was ready to make my own rules but how could I? Did I really want to quit my 6-figure salary corporate job and sacrifice a healthy paycheck? My answer: YES!

How I Was Able To Quit My Job

Enough Savings: I was financially okay for a few years, without depending on my husband. My rule of thumb is to have enough savings to afford the essentials for a minimum of a year. You never know what life will throw at you. I highly recommend paying off any credit card debt before you quit!

Alternative Income Streams: I created a small business and a passive income method.

Give yourself time to prepare: My husband and I planned for my leave before I quit my corporate job. We made sure we were financially set, and his job would allow me to join his health plan.

Set long-term goals and purpose: I made big goals that excited me to get up every morning. I reminded myself that I created my small business to make my own rules, create my own schedule, and support the mental health community.

My husband had health benefits: This was a top reason that allowed me quit my job. His company allowed me to get onto his health benefits. If this isn’t an option for you, then recommend to read the below section on what I would do instead.

Altnerative Route

Finances: Prioritize paying off debt. Ensure I had about two or three years’ worth of savings to pay for essentials.

Health Benefits: Explore cost-efficient health programs offered by the city and/or state.

Living Situation: If I was single, I would move back with my parents. Although if this wasn’t an option, I’d consider a lower-cost apartment rent. While it may be a sacrifice, it may be worth it in the end of your goals are met!

Goals/Mission: Unsure what you want to do in life and what your mission is? Make a list of values in life that are important to you and see what they all sum up to. What’s the common theme on your list? Are you living this theme right now? How can you achieve and make it come to life? This will help to give you perception and lead you down the road of having a clearer view of your goals.

While I felt miserable towards the end of my career, I did not regret any of my former jobs. I gained a tremendous amount of great experiences, knowledge, and friendships. I will always be grateful for them. My career taught me what I loved and what I wanted to change as my own boss.

As a disclaimer, the reasons why I quit my job do not apply to everyone. People have unique lifestyles, and it’s up to us to carve our own paths. I am not a professional financial advisor nor a health therapist. These are my own opinion and thoughts. Please seek professional assistance if needed.
