The literal translation is “drug eggs”. The dish is extremely delicious and addicting that you keep wanting to eat more! The combination of sweet and savory flavors with jammy center eggs mixed with rice is pure bliss.
Korean marinated eggs are a great add-on to Korean side dishes. My grandmother frequently made this dish when I grew up. It was a simple and fast dish that she could make in batches.
I make this dish frequently as my husband loves to eat it. It’s super simple and fast to make! Including boiling the eggs, the entire step takes about 15 minutes.
Ways to Eat
Korean marinated eggs are a simple combination of primarily soy sauce, water, sugar, and garlic. If you want to spice it up, add chilies such as Thai chili’s (my favorite) or jalapenos.
Onions are optional but I add them since I love them. It’s definitely not a mouth freshener but the flavor is out of this world!
My favorite way to eat Korean marinated eggs is to mix with rice. It’s just a simple and very flavorful dish. The dish tastes even better with a side of kimchi.
Consume the marinated eggs within 4-6 days of making them. You might end up eating 2 in one serving because it is that delicious!

Korean Marinated Eggs (Mayak Eggs)
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, and etc For less sweetness, use 2 tbsp
- 1/4 white or yellow onion, chopped
- 3 stalks of green onions, chopped
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 3 thai chili's (optional) can use jalapeños
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 6 eggs, soft boiled and peeled
Instructions
- Boil 6 eggs for 6-7 minutes for soft-boiled eggs6 eggs, soft boiled and peeled
- Peel the eggs and place them in a food container
- In a measuring cup, add water and soy sauce1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup soy sauce
- Add sweetener in the measuring cup and stir1/4 cup sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, and etc
- In the measurig cup, add onions, green onions, garlic, and chilis1/4 white or yellow onion, chopped, 3 stalks of green onions, chopped, 3 cloves of garlic, 3 thai chili's (optional)
- Stir all the ingredients together
- Pour over the soft-boiled eggs and sprinkel sesame seeds1 tbsp sesame seeds
- Marinate 4-6 hours before eating
