While grocery stores sell bulgogi sauce that you can just mix with beef, making it from scratch at home isn’t that bad. You really only need 4 core ingredients:

  1. Soy Sauce
  2. Any type of sweetner
  3. Sesame seed oil
  4. Garlic

Everything else is pretty much optional, including vegetables.

  • In a bowl, add any thinly sliced beef
  • Add sugar and minced garlic.
  • Mix well and marinate it while chopping vegetables
  • Add soy sauce and sesame seed oil.
  • Mix well
  • Add any vegetables you like, but I recommend adding onions at least.
  • Cook until meat is cooked

What Exactly is Bulgogi

Bulgogi translate to fire (bul) meat (gogi). It originated from northern Korea. It’s now a common dish in South Korea and popular worldwide!

Traditionally, it’s grilled but many households cook it on the stovetop. Myself included.

Bulgogi is sweet, salty, and savory. It was one of my favorite dishes growing up because of its sweetness. My mom used to make the sauce from scratch until Korean grocery stores pre-made them. All you had to do was just cook it.

Type of Beef for Bulgogi

You can use any thinly sliced beef. Ribeye is the most common choice.

When to Eat It

Bulgogi can be enjoyed 365 days. Although it is common to see it at birthday parties, weddings, and other big celebrations.

Sometimes parents cook it when their kids visit from college or far away.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lbs Thinly sliced beef (Rib eye)
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2.5 tbsp sweetner (sugar, corn syrup, etc) If using honey, add more than 2 tbsp
  • 2 tsp Sesame seed oil
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 Onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots
  • black pepper

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, add the beef and mix with sweetner and garlic
    1 lbs Thinly sliced beef (Rib eye), 1 tbsp minced garlic, 2.5 tbsp sweetner (sugar, corn syrup, etc)
  • Let it marinate while chopping vegetables
  • Chop vegetables of your choice. I recommend using an onion, at least.
    2 green onions, chopped, 1/2 Onion, chopped, 1/2 cup mushrooms, 1/4 cup shredded carrots
  • In the meat bowl, add sesame seed oil, soy sauce, and black pepper (optional)
    2 tsp Sesame seed oil, 1/3 cup soy sauce, black pepper
  • Let it marinate for 30 minutes to overnight or cook immediately
  • On a frying pan, add the meat and cook until cooked (no need to add oil)
